Manufactured Beds and Upholstery

A History of Elite Beds

Elite’s founder Fred Weiss moved to Glasgow in 1938 at the age of 17, before the Second World War started. Needing to support himself and his mother who he managed to bring across the year later, Fred started working as a junior in Caplans bedding factory which was situated in the East End of Glasgow. As war broke out and colleagues got called up on military service, he gradually learned the whole process of mattress and bed manufacturing.

After moving on from Caplans and working for a few other bedding companies, Fred made the decision in 1952 to try and start up his own company setting himself up making beds, cushions and mattresses in a back yard building in South Side of Glasgow.

In 1954 Fred took over the failed business of Hugh Haughan Ltd and Elite Bedding was born. Elite have continued to this day to manufacture quality beds to both the private and public sector, which many generations of families throughout Britain have slept soundly on ever since.
